Terms

It has come to my attention that the term birthmother is sometimes not the best word and it offends some. I have been conditioned to call Sandy that- but for the sake of not offending and maybe I myself don't agree with the term- I will try from now on to just call Sandy Sandy and my aparents my aparents.

Use the terms that YOU (and Sandy) are comfortable with. Some women are fine with that term. Others are not. Sometimes I say "natural", but then I get flack from people saying that the term "natural" implies that adoption is unnatural....which, in my opinion, it is.

"Birth" mother always cracked me up...does that make my adoptive mother my "death" mother???

I did not know the history of the term "birth" mother until a few years ago. (It was coined by the adoption industry) I still use it on occasion, because that is the term people outside of adoption are used to, but yes, many first Mothers are offended by that term.

At the end of the day, it's up to YOU. ;)

I never got to say goodbye said...

Thanks! :)
She calls herself my birthmom.
